Is my data backed up? Where is my data backed up? |
| |
When you HotSync, your database gets backed up to your Backup folder for your user name that is in your Palm directory.
For example, if your user name is Jane Doe, the path to your backup directory will likely be C:\palm\jdoe\backup\.
A backup file ends with ".PDB". Depending on the program you are using, you may see one, or many backup files for a particular program.
For example, the backup file for ThoughtMill is named TMillDB.PDB.
To restore a backup file, you simply install it like you would install a PalmPilot application using the InstApp program that came with your pilot.
Your Palm HotSync software will normally maintain many .PDB files in the backup directory. If your backup directory is empty, you are having a problem with synchronization. Check your HotSync log file to see if any errors are generated during your HotSync session.
Also, some software may interfere with the backup process. Specifically, some users have reported that McAfee VirusShield can prevent some .PDB files from getting backed up. Back to the top |

My Palm seems to be locked up. What should I do? |
| |
First, write down the steps you took to create the problem and send them to us in an email (if you haven't already done so).
Then, reset the device.
There are a couple of ways to reset the device. There is a small hole in the back of your Palm. Unscrew the top of your Palm stylus and push the pin into the hole in the back of your Palm device. If you do not have a stylus with a reset pin, use the end of a paper clip. DO NOT USE A SEWING PIN OR NEEDLE!
For really bad problems, you might have to do a debug reset, or even a hard reset.
To do a debug reset, push the paper clip in while you hold down the page up button at the bottom of the front of your PalmPilot. After the reset screen comes on, let go of the up button. You might have to try this a couple of times to get it right, but if you are successful, you will see the preferences screen. If you are successful, immediately delete the application that caused the problem (because it will probably cause it again.)
If you are not successful after a couple of tries to do a debug reset, then you will need to do a hard reset. WARNING!!! A hard reset will erase the data on your Palm. You should immediately HotSync after a hard reset to restore your data from your desktop computer. You might also have to reinstall your applications.
To do a hard reset, push the paper clip in to the back while holding down the power button. After the reset screen comes up let go of the power button. You will be asked if you want to erase all your data. Press the up button to erase your data, then HotSync to restore your data from your desktop computer. Back to the top |

Will your products work in FLASH? |
| |
Flash memory is a form of non-volatile memory that was found in some earlier Palm devices (Palm V and earlier), and which you could get to using products like JackFlash. All products except for ThoughtManager can be loaded into FLASH. In order for the programs to work properly, you will need to load them into RAM, open them, then move them into FLASH.

I got a new handheld. How do I transfer all of my programs and information? |
| |
All the information should restore to your Palm when you hotsync the new one. There are three very important things to follow to make sure all of your old stuff gets on to your new handheld:
1.) Hotsync your old Palm one last time.
Reason: To make sure all your data is current.
2.) You install the new Palm Desktop software into the same directory that you installed the old Palm Desktop software.
Reason: There is a backup directory in the Palm folder (more precisely, Palm\username\backup) that stores most of the programs and data of programs you installed into the Palm, including your preferences file. Also, all of your core info (ToDo List, MemoPad AddressBook Datebook) is located in your Palm directory (each in their own folders, in your Palm\username directory).
3.) You MUST use the same Palm username you previously used.
Reason: All your data is located under your username. This shouldn't be much of an issue, since there is no username assigned to a new Palm device. Simply slip in the cradle (after installing all the appropriate software) and press the hotsync button. It will ask you if you would like to use a former username or create a new one, you will want to use the former username. Doing so should install all of the programs and data that was previously on your old palm onto the new one.
