(Tampa, Florida.) ToDo PLUS(TM), from Hands High Software, Inc., was voted Top Shareware Program of the Year in the PDA category at the Shareware Industry Awards in Tampa Florida.
ToDo PLUS is an enhanced task list manager for the Palm Computing(R) platform. In addition to basic task management, ToDo PLUS allows users to attach drawings to a task, set an alarm for a task, create repeating tasks, and view a summary of all their tasks.
Hands High Software offers a free 15-day trial of ToDo PLUS from its Web site (http://www.handshigh.com/). After 15-days, the program puts up a small reminder asking users to register, but is still fully functional.
The Shareware Industry Awards are presented annually at the Shareware Industry Conference, and honor the very best software products marketed using the Shareware model. Shareware is commonly referred to as "try before you buy" software. Shareware is typically found on the Internet, through bulletin boards, and through software collections on CD-ROM's. Users can download and try a product for free. If the user likes it, the user pays a registration fee. Shareware registration fees are typically much less than commercial products.
Since the release of the first Palm(TM) connected organizer in 1996, the Shareware industry for the Palm Computing platform has exploded. Popular places to download Shareware for the Palm connected organizer include PalmGear (www.palmgear.com) and PalmCentral (www.palmcentral.com). PalmGear boasts over 3000 software titles available for download as Shareware.
Kenny West, founder of PalmGear, said "While some may view the term 'Shareware' somehow as a negative term, it has been our experience that the most innovative products are in fact Shareware. Add to this fast response times to customer requests for new features and technical support and you have a winning combination that has propelled the Palm Computing platform to it's current domination more so than any other single factor."
ToDo PLUS was chosen above three other finalists, which included, HackMaster from Daggerware, Solitaire Pack from Curtis Gabor, and Planetarium, from AHoSoft. Products were voted on by journalists, software authors, bulletin board managers, and distributors of Shareware software. Winners were announced on July 24 at the Shareware Industry Conference in Tampa, Florida.
When asked what makes the Shareware model of marketing effective, Shannon Pekary, president of Hands High Software, said "Shareware treats people with respect, allowing them to decide for themselves whether a product is right for them, rather than having to rely on marketing hype on a box or in an advertisement. I find that most people are honest, and want to pay the registration fee for a program they use. However, they are also busy. All they really need is a simple reminder to encourage them to pay and an easy, fast way to do it." He also points to fast, effective customer service as a way to put confidence in a product and encourage registrations.
