The newest version of Trip includes a conduit to automatically export your mileage information to a database file on your desktop computer every time you HotSync. It also includes an
Excel spreadsheet that will easily turn your Trip data into a mileage expense report.
The Windows version of Trip 3.0 is in beta, and we hope to put the Macintosh version in beta soon. To sign up, go to our new
Beta sign up page at:
http://www.handshigh.com/html/beta_registration.html

NEWS FROM 3COM
Palm Vx now shipping --------------------
This is actually a little old (a whopping 3 months), but the Palm Vx is now shipping. It is essentially a Palm V with 8 MB of RAM in it. I have one and love it.
Palm OS 3.3 Flash shipping
-------------------------- The latest Palm OS is now available. It is Palm OS 3.3 and comes as a Flash ROM upgrade. Most Palm devices available are capable of
upgrading to this OS for free. The Palm devices that are not upgradeable are the original Pilot devices, the PalmPilot Personal, PalmPilot Professional, and Palm IIIe. The Palm III, Palm IIIx, and
Palm V line are upgradeable. The Palm VII, while upgradeable, cannot upgrade to OS 3.3. Palm is planning an OS 3.5 upgrade that will include the Palm VII. An older Palm that has an OS 3.0
upgrade card IS upgradeable.
The main features of the new OS are: * Support for hotsyncing through a laptop's infrared port * Faster hotsync for Windows computers * Improved network logon
To get OS 3.3, go to http://www.palm.com/custsupp/upgrade/
Palm to be Spun Off ------------------- 3Com has announced that they are going to spin off the Palm
Computing division into its own company and offer an IPO. They also just announced a new CEO for the company, Carl Yankowski, a former president and CEO of Sony. You can see more at a Forbes article at:
http://www.forbes.com/tool/html/99/Dec/1202/mu13.htm
Sony Becoming a Partner ----------------------- Sony has announced that they are going to create Palm devices
instead of Windows CE devices. This is great news, as more and more devices out there will mean better software and support for current users.
Operating System Updates ------------------------
The latest operating system updates are:
* OS update 1.0.6 for original Pilot users * OS update 2.0.5 for PalmPilot users * OS update 3.0.2 for Palm III users * OS update 3.1.1 for Palm IIIx and Palm V users
* OS 3.3 as mentioned above * Desktop PalmPilot version 3.0.1 for all Palm OS devices for Windows * Desktop PalmPilot version 2.5 for all Palm OS devices for Macintosh
Other updates include
* Email conduit update for people having trouble synchronizing email * Enhanced Infrared update * Login script enhancement
All of these updates are free and available on the Palm Computing
Web site at http://www.palm.com/custsupp/downloads/

NOTES FROM THE DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE
As always, the developers conference was overwhelming. The Palm community is hard to keep up with. Here are some things I thought were the most interesting:
1) New Palm devices.
HandSpring, TRG, Qualcomm, and Symbol all showed off new devices. A summary:
HandSpring: Includes a new SpringBoard port, which is like a PCMCIA slot, but with no limit on thickness. Lots of people
are making add-ons, including phones, pagers, MP3 players, GPS, and lots more. See http://www.handspring.com/
TRG: A Palm with a CompactFlash module port. A 300+ MB hard disk
the size of a postage stamp is already available for this device. It also has a great speaker. See http://www.trgpro.com/
Qualcomm: A cellular phone and Palm combo. See http://www.qualcomm.com/
Symbol: A Palm device with local-area network access through a built-in radio. They also have industrial strength Palms and Palms with bar-code readers built-in. See http://www.symbol.com/
2) Color Devices Coming!
While no color devices are available now, Palm released an early version of an operating system that supports full color. Real devices were said to be likely available some time
in the middle of 2000, but of course no promises were made.
3) Nice Keyboard to be offered by 3Com.
Some time in early next year, 3Com should be shipping a fold-up
keyboard for your Palm device. I had a chance to see try this keyboard, and I thought it was real nice. It folds up to a size about as big as a PalmPilot Professional. The keys felt good to type on, not mushy.
